English has a central role in both education and in society in general. At BISM, we believe a high-quality education in English will teach pupils to speak and write fluently so that they can communicate their ideas and emotions to others.

Through reading in particular, pupils have a chance to develop culturally, emotionally, intellectually, socially and spiritually. Literature plays a key role in such development, while Reading also enables pupils to acquire knowledge and build on what they already know. 

Throughout Secondary School at BISM, pupils are taught to appreciate and understand increasingly complex texts, including Shakespeare, 19th Century writers and modern novels. Carefully planned lessons to cater for the range of abilities in the classroom ensure that every child matters and that every child can achieve to the best of their ability.

Regular testing on spelling, grammar and end of unit tasks ensures that students are constantly developing and improving on their skills, under careful teacher guidance and expertise.

Poetry helps students to appreciate how language is used to create effects and they have fun learning how to respond to, and to write their own poetry. 

Students are encouraged and guided to read often and to read widely. The English department believes that reading is not only a pleasure; it also enhances vocabulary and written skills.

Public speaking and presentation skills are frequently taught, ensuring that students are equipped to meet the changing demands of the modern world. By Year 10/11, students will be effective communicators with insightful, critical minds, able to tackle the demands of the IGCSE and beyond.

Grammar, writing skills and comprehension are re-visited and consolidated in homework that both extends and deepens their knowledge and skills.

All pupils study English Language in Year 10/11 in order to gain an IGCSE qualification in this crucial subject. English Literature is offered as an IGCSE and A level option.
