Early Years

The Early Years at BISM is housed in a purpose built campus within walking distance from the Main Campus. The classrooms are spacious and well integrated with a large outdoor play area.

We follow the UK EYFS curriculum which identifies seven key areas of learning, divided into three general areas (communication and language, personal, social and emotional development and physical development) and four specific areas (literacy, mathematics, understanding the world and expressive arts and design).

Each class is led by a teacher and supported by a teaching assistant. Daily literacy and mathematics activities are led by the class teacher. Sports, music and Spanish literacy lessons are taught by specialist teachers.

The rest of the day's learning activities are delivered in the form of continuous provision, an approach which allows children to learn seamlessly through play. A range of activities are set out indoors and outdoors in which children can engage freely. The activities are carefully planned and designed to incorporate the key learning objectives of the moment. Teachers guide children through the activities, offering support where appropriate.

Lunch is an important part of the day. All children eat together in the main hall with their class and their teachers. Meals are cooked in-house and are nutritionally balanced and adapted for young children.

Weekly assemblies are a time when all Early Years classes congregate and experience life in community. Assemblies typically feature storytelling, singing and performances by pupils.

Day trips within the local area are organised a few times a year to places like a local farm or a nearby chocolate factory in order to enrich and broaden pupils’ educational experience.

We work closely with parents to ensure that pupils thrive and progress well through each stage of their education. Parents receive a daily verbal update from their teacher and a weekly written update. We also hold regular workshops and organise activities for parents to work alongside their child so that they can experience and see their learning in action.
